I'd suggest calling up the Paris Marriott Rive Gauche the day before check-in, and request that they note on your reservation a request for an upgrade. I did, and it worked out pretty good :). Regarding Amsterdam -- I can't comment on the Renaissance rooms as I haven't stayed there... but I do think the location of the Renaissance is closer to the main train station and many of the tourist sights. The Amsterdam Marriott is a bit of a walk from the touristy things -- but most of the major trolley lines stop in front of the Amsterdam Marriott -- so provided you ride the trolleys, you can get anywhere pretty quickly. And indeed it is curious that we both have the same last name... I've been told the name comes from some Irish background once upon a time. We have the hotel booked in April for 5 days on a tour around Europe using Marriott Points. I had originally booked the Marriott Champs-Elyees and switched because there is no lounge at that hotel. I am also platinum Marriott so hopefully I will also receive an upgrade because the rooms look a little small, but that is typical in Europe.
