Taking the family to Disney California Adventure (DCA) is an absolute blast. While classic Disneyland is perfect for the youngest kids, DCA is geared a bit more toward the 4-to-5+ crowd with slightly more thrilling rides and a distinct California fairground vibe. We recently spent a spent a full day conquering the park, and we’ve put together our top tips, tricks, and a few mistakes to avoid so your family can have the perfect day.
⏰ The Morning Strategy
Getting a head start is the most important thing you can do for your family’s sanity.
- Arrive Early: Try to get through security 30 minutes before the official park opening time. If you can muster the early wake-up, you’ll experience the shortest lines of the day between opening and lunchtime. We walked right onto Soarin’ with zero wait!
- Designate an “App Person”: If you are visiting on a busy summer weekend, purchasing the Lightning Lane Multi Pass is practically required. Nominate one adult to be the designated Disneyland App master. Their entire job is to book your next Lightning Lane the second you scan into your current ride.
- Use the Grace Period: Running late? Lightning Lanes have a grace period (5 minutes early or 15 minutes late). If you absolutely can’t make it, edit the reservation in the app to a different ride rather than canceling it so you don’t reset your booking window.
- Bring a Battery Backup: You will be using the Disneyland App constantly for ride passes, wait times, and mobile food orders. Bring a portable charger to avoid a dead phone by 11:30 AM!

🎢 Ride Highlights (and What to Skip)
Must-Do Attractions
- Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure: A fully interactive 3D ride where you use your arms to physically shoot webs at robot spiders.
- Radiator Springs Racers: This is DCA’s signature ride. It does not come with the standard Multi Pass; it requires an individual Lightning Lane purchase (around $23/person), but it saves you from a 2+ hour standby line. Pro-Tip: Ride this midday! It breaks down frequently, so you don’t want to save it for the end of the night only to find it closed. Have smaller kids sit on the outside edges of the front row so they can clearly see over the dashboard.
- Toy Story Midway Mania: Another great interactive 3D shooting gallery over on Pixar Pier.
The Soaking Wet Truth About Grizzly River Run
This is the ultimate family raft ride, but you will get completely soaked.
- Bring Your Own Poncho: Do not buy the $15 plastic raincoats at the park! We brought along yellow painting jackets from the Shop of Art back home in Irvine to keep the family dry.
- Bring Spare Shoes: A change of clothes is great, but a change of shoes is critical. Swapping into Crocs or sandals just for this ride will save you from walking around in squishy sneakers all afternoon.
What to Skip
- The Little Mermaid: It’s a very slow, slightly underwhelming dark ride. Save it only if your kids are die-hard Ariel fans, or if you desperately need 10 minutes of air conditioning.
- Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!: This massive drop-tower is incredibly fast and thrilling, but usually much too scary for the younger crowd.
🍕 Fueling Up & Cooling Down
When the afternoon heat peaks, it’s time to strategize your meals and AC breaks.
- Eat at 11:00 AM: Eat an early lunch before the rest of the park gets hungry. If you use Mobile Order on the app, don’t forget to tap “I am here” when you arrive, or they won’t start making your food!
- Kid-Friendly Eats: Boardwalk Pizza and Pasta is a winner. For $8.99, kids get spaghetti, a drink, and a side (like applesauce or a Cutie orange). Adults can grab tacos and elote corn right next door at San Francisco Square (OC Girl loved the birria tacos!).
- Snack Time: Grab a classic Mickey ice cream sandwich, or treat yourself to a $23 Strawberry Passion Sundae from the famous Ghirardelli shop.
- AC Breaks: When everyone is exhausted, head to Hollywood Land. Mickey’s PhilharMagic (a 13-minute 3D movie) and the Disney Junior Dance Party both offer fantastic, air-conditioned environments to rest your feet.
🎒 Final Pro-Tips
- Embrace the Stroller: Even if your six-year-old usually walks, bring the stroller! A sturdy model (We uss the UPPAbaby Cruz) is perfect for navigating crowds, holding heavy backpacks, and providing a shaded spot for a mid-day nap. Just remember to empty the bottom basket before going through security or boarding parking shuttles.
- Calling it a Day: Let’s be honest, if you’re traveling with kids, you probably aren’t making it to the 9:00 PM World of Color nighttime spectacular. When the little ones hit a wall, head into Downtown Disney for dinner at Din Tai Fung or Earl of Sandwich, and head back to the hotel to rest up for tomorrow.
As always, fellow explorers… we won’t say goodbye, because we’ll see you in the next post!
